In 1995, Edward James Olmos along with then-New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman, and public and law enforcement officials took part in a town hall meeting on youth violence.

Entitled "Wordup: Stop The Violence," more than 400 high school students and youths from New Jersey's juvenile detention system took part in the meeting, giving attendees the chance to openly address violence among young people and discuss solutions to the problem.
