The New York Daily News is reporting that Edward James Olmos is amongst nearly 1,500 signatories of a petition urging the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to consider films from Puerto Rico in the Best Foreign Language Film category.
According to the report, Oscar-nominee Mr. Olmos is joined by Oscar-winning Benicio del Toro and "a host of Latino Organizations" in signing the online petition at Change.org. The endeavor was organized by the producer of America, Frances Lausell.
Over the years, Puerto Rico has submitted 11 films for Oscar consideration but this year, a "clarification" by the Academy effectively left productions from the U.S. Protectorate out in the cold.
America is a production of Puerto Rico and was predominantly filmed in Spanish, though it contains some English dialogue. It stars Lymari Nadal (Edward James Olmos’ wife), Mr. Olmos, Yancey Arias, Rachel Ticotin, Tony Plana, and James Callis, and was directed by Sonia Fritz.
