"The Princess and The Barrio Boy" is a coming-of-age TV movie that doesn't push the usual formula but it does gives it a Latino flavor which suits me just fine.
It's truly nice to see other cultures celebrated in this genre, and not just focused on the typical Anglo-Saxon pairing. We need more of this.
Mr. Olmos plays Nestor Garcia, a self-made man who grew up in the barrio but now lives in Beverly Hills. He's also a widower with two children, a young son and teen-aged daughter, whom he loves. Unfortunately, in an effort to deal with his grief, he's become distracted by work and taken on an overbearing (and underhanded) fiance that the children despise.
Needless to say the plot comes down to a choice for the father – the new woman or his children from his beloved late wife – and he makes the right one.
