Between the numerous projects and events of his summer, Edward James Olmos filmed (at least) nine episodes of Showtime's DEXTER.

Although he guest-starred in an episode of CSI:NY earlier this year, DEXTER marks Mr. Olmos' first foray into a recurring role on a regular series since Battlestar Galactica went off the air in 2009.

News of his DEXTER casting broke in May and spread like wildfire in the virtual world, with blogs and media racing to get out the word.

At Comicpalooza in Houston, just after the announcement, I brought up to him how quickly and broadly word of his casting had spread. He was clearly pleased at the positive response, agreeing, "It was like a shot heard around the world."

The sixth season of the dark and sometimes darkly humorous DEXTER premieres on Sunday, taking us once again into Dexter Morgan's world of single parenthood, blood spatters, and vigilante justice. According to the films' stars, guest stars, and producers, this will be the darkest season yet, seeing the rejuvenation of Dexter's dark passenger, and will have strong religious overtones as Dexter (Michael C. Hall) considers the role of faith in the life of his son.

Mr. Olmos and Colin Hanks (son of Tom Hanks) are bringing the religion element in the form of Professor Gellar, a charismatic professor of religious studies, and his young disciple, Travis. Then there's Mos Def, who plays an ex-con claiming to have found religion even though he's surrounded by violence.

It's unknown at this point if one or all of them will find themselves on Dexter's table before the season's end. Regardless, if this outing of the show is anything like its predecessors, we're in for one hell of a ride.
