From a crop of literally thousands of independent films, the Sundance Film Festival has selected Filly Brown to join 15 other films to compete in the event's 2012 U.S. Dramatic Competition.

A Latino music drama, Filly Brown tells the story of "a street poet whose skill on the mic earns her a shot at rap stardom under the tutelage of a hit-making producer. But as her star rises, she risks losing what she values most — her family."

Directed by Youssef Delara (who also penned the script) and Michael D. Olmos, the film stars Gina Rodriguez, Jenni Rivera, Lou Diamond Phillips, and Edward James Olmos. Battlestar Galactica's Bodie Olmos and Jamie Bamber also appear.

Of the selection, Michael Olmos said, "I and the entire Olmos Productions Team are honored and excited to be a part of the U.S. Dramatic Competition at the 2012 Sundance Festival."

Filly Brown is produced by Olmos Productions, Cima Productions, and Silent Giant Entertainment.
