Fresh off opening the New York Latino Film Festival, independent film sensation Filly Brown will open the San Francisco Latino Film Festival on Friday, September 14.

The screening is at 7:30 p.m. at the Victoria Theater (tickets). A second screening is slated for Saturday, September 15 at 9:15 p.m. at Opera Plaza (tickets). The festival runs from Sept. 13-28.

Directed by Youssef Delara and Michael D. Olmos, Filly Brown tells the story of “a tough L.A. street poet” whose “life becomes a roller coaster when she tries to get her mother out of jail.” It stars Gina Rodriguez, Jenni Rivera, Lou Diamond Phillips and Edward James Olmos. Stars Rodriguez, a sensation at the Sundance Film Festival, and Philips walked away with top acting honors from the 2012 Imagen Awards last month.

Filly Brown is scheduled for theatrical release in January 2013.
