The cast and crew of Filly Brown are mourning the loss of actress and musician Jenni Rivera who was killed Sunday in a plane crash in Monterrey, Mexico.
Rivera played the incarcerated mother of the film's title character and earned praise for her performance.
Edward James Olmos spoke highly of Rivera and told Billboard that "news of the plane crash tore my heart out."
"Jenni was just an amazing force. From the very beginning I've said that she could garner an Academy Award for her work in Filly Brown. She had a tough life, but she also had an extraordinary gift. She touched millions of people and she'll be missed," Mr. Olmos stated.
Ms. Rivera was a popular Mexican-American singer who transformed herself into a reality TV Star ("I Love Jenni"), and served as a coach on "The Voice Mexico."
