Filmmaker Youssef Delara provided a press release today that announced principal photography has been completed on the upcoming Latino music drama Filly Brown. The film stars Edward James Olmos, Lou Diamond Phillips, Jenni Rivera, and Gina Rodriguez as "the eponymous character."
The press release defines Filly Brown as "a gritty urban drama" that "follows Majo Tonorio a.k.a. Filly Brown, a young L.A. street poet whose skill on the mic earns her a shot at rap stardom under the tutelage of a hit-making producer. But as her star rises, she risks losing what she values most -- her family."
"The project is a unique collaboration among a who’s who of the Latino film and music community, together with an ensemble cast of supporting players drawn largely from the Latino rap scene, including Baby Bash, Chingo Bling, B Millz, MC Magic and Cuete Yeska," the release states. "In addition to providing the vehicle for Mexican Regional music sensation Jenni Rivera’s feature film debut, Filly Brown reunites Latino film icons Edward James Olmos and Lou Diamond Phillips on screen together for the first time since their breakout 1988 film Stand and Deliver."
Filly Brown is co-directed by Mr. Delara and Michael D. Olmos from a script by Mr. Delara, and is produced by Cima Productions partners Victor Teran and Amir Delara, along with Olmos Productions' Mico Olmos and Michael D. Olmos, and Silent Giant's Edward "E Dub" Rios and Lisa "Khool Aid" Rios.
The film is released by Cima Productions, Olmos Productions, and Silent Giant Entertainment with Edward James Olmos, Kevin Smith, and Homa Soroor serving as executive producers.
