Awards and Honors

Edward James Olmos has been nominated and has won a number of awards in his acting career, and for his humanitarian efforts and social activism.

Academy Awards (Oscars)
  • 1989: Mr. Olmos was nominated for an Oscar as Best Actor in a Leading Role for his portrayal of real-life teacher Jaime Escalante in Stand and Deliver.
Tony Awards (Broadway)
  • 1978: Mr. Olmos was nominated for a Tony Award for his breakout stage role as El Pachuco in Zoot Suit, a role he went on to reprise in the 1981 film version.
Emmy Awards
  • 1995: Mr. Olmos was nominated for the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Special for his role in "The Burning Season".
  • 1986: Mr. Olmos was nominated for the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Lt. Martin Castillo in "Miami Vice".
  • 1985: Mr. Olmos won the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Lt. Martin Castillo in "Miami Vice".
Directors Guild of America (DGA)
  • 2007: Mr. Olmos was nominated for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Movies for Television for "Walkout".
Golden Globes
  • 1995: Mr. Olmos won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for TV for "The Burning Season". (Watch Acceptance Speech)
  • 1989: Mr. Olmos was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture (Drama) for Stand and Deliver.

L.A. Drama Critic's Award
  • 1978: The L.A. Drama Critics awarded Mr. Olmos for his stage performance as El Pachuco in Zoot Suit.

  • 2008: Mr. Olmos won the ALMA for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Television Series for "Battlestar Galactica"
  • 2007: Mr. Olmos won the ALMA for Outstanding Actor (Television Series, Mini-Series or Television Movie) for "Battlestar Galactica", and for Outstanding Director (Television Series, Mini-series, Television Movie) for "Walkout". He tied with Kenny Ortega for High School Musical for the directing honor.
  • 2006: Mr. Olmos nominated the ALMA for Outstanding Actor in a Television Series for "Battlestar Galactica"
  • 2002: Mr. Olmos nominated the ALMA for Outstanding Actor/Actress in a Made for Television Movie or Miniseries for "The Judge"
  • 1999: Mr. Olmos won the ALMA for Outstanding Individual Performance in a Made-for-Television Movie or Mini-Series in a Crossover Role for "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3"
  • 1998: Mr. Olmos won the ALMA for Outstanding Actor in a Feature Film for Selena, and Outstanding Individual Performance in a Made-for-Television Movie or Mini-Series in a Crossover Role for "12 Angry Men". Mr. Olmos was also nominated for Outstanding Actor in a Made-for-Television Movie or Mini-Series for "Hollywood Confidential".

  • 2009: Mr. Olmos won the Saturn Award for Best Actor in Television for his role in "Battlestar Galactica"
  • 2008: Mr. Olmos was nominated for the Saturn Award for Best Actor on Television for his role in "Battlestar Galactica"
  • 2007: Mr. Olmos was nominated for the Saturn Award for Best Actor in a Television Program his role in "Battlestar Galactica"

  • 2007: Mr. Olmos won Best Director (Network/Cable) for "Walkout"
Huelva Latin American Film Festival
  • 1998: Mr. Olmos was honored with the Prize of the City of Huelva award.

Image Awards
  • 2010: Mr. Olmos was nominated for Outstanding Directing in a Dramatic Series for the "Battlestar Galactica" episode "Islanded in a Stream of Stars."

Independent Spirit Awards
  • 1989: Mr. Olmos won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead for his role in Stand and Deliver.

Lone Star Film & Television Awards
  • 1998: Mr. Olmos won Best Supporting Actor for his role in Selena.

NCLR Bravo Awards
  • 1996: Mr. Olmos won the Bravo Award for Outstanding Actor in a Feature Film for his role in Caught, and won Outstanding Individual Performance in Made for Television Movie or Mini-Series for "Dead Man's Walk". He was also nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Male in a Variety or Music Series/Special for Latino Laugh Festival.

Prism Awards
  • 2003: Mr. Olmos was nominated for Performance in a Drama Series Multi-Episode Storyline for his role in "American Family"

Taos Talking Picture Festival
  • 1996: Mr. Olmos was honored with the Cineaste Award.

Women in Film Crystal Awards
  • 1989: Mr. Olmos was honored with the Humanitarian Award.
